Principles for Spiritual Growth

Principles For Spiritual Growth

Sunday October 20, 2013

Once we become born again by the Spirit of God, we are “babes” in Christ and we need to grow spiritually. Sadly, there are many Christians who never go on to maturity. They need to go from being a convert to a true disciple of Jesus.

They do not produce spiritual fruit and they waste the opportunities that God has given them. God’s desire is that we grow into full maturity of Christ. Eph 4:11-13

The writer of the Book of Hebrews addressed this problem in the church. Hebrews 5:12-14, “For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you…” These believers were slothful and lazy in their attitude of hearing the Word and it had resulted in lack of spiritual growth.

There are a lot of Christians who put other priorities above serving God and being obedient to His Word. This stunts their spiritual growth. All of us need to move on into maturity so that we can be effective in the body of Christ and produce much fruit.

I want to give you a few principles that will help you grow spiritually:

1. You must forget the past.

Philippians 3:13-14, “Forgetting those things behind, press on to the high calling in Christ.” Know that God doesn’t remember your sins. Don’t just live on past blessings and become complacent. We must continue to reach toward future blessings God has in store for us. Press on and get more of God!

Take authority over the devil and do not allow him to hold you to past failures and mistakes. If you allow this, your prayers and your faith won’t work for you. This inhibits your spiritual growth, Get into the Word of God and confess it. Know who you are “in Christ”and your standing in Him.

2. You must forgive and walk in total forgiveness.

Ephesians 4:32, “Unforgiveness and bitterness can poison the physical body.” It is like drinking poison and hoping it will hurt the other person. Get over it and move on with God. Don’t get biter, get better.

Galatians 6:5 says your faith works by love.

3. You must learn to pray in order to grow spiritually.

You must develop a prayer life. Know that there are different kinds of prayer for different circumstances. You must use Word-based prayers back to God. This prays His perfect will. Leave the “if” out of your prayers – the Word is your inheritance. I John 5:14-15. Asyou build your prayer life on the Word of God, you will grow spiritually. Ask in Jesus’ name John 16: 23-24. Know the authority in His name. This gives you a solid foundation for your faith.

4. You must learn to believe the promises of God.

2 Corinthians 1:20 – all the promises are “yes” and “amen”. As you get the promises od God down into your spirit, you will grow spiritually. Get in the spirit real and do not allow doubt to come in. Just believe God’s word and stand on it. Mark 11:24, “Believe that you receive. Walk by faith not by sight.”

5. You must be a worshiper of God.

John 4:23-24 – Worship Him in Spirit. Since you are one spirit with Him, you can worship Him. You can worship him anywhere, anytime. Make it a priority to worship Him and when you do you will grow spiritually. There will be closeness with God.

6. You must walk with God.

James 4:8 – Draw near to him. Enoch walked with God Get to know your heavenly Father. Spend time with Him. Minister to Him. As you walk in the spirit (Galatians 5:16), you will grow spiritually and your spirit will dominate the flesh.

7. You must learn to be a witness.

Acts 1:8, “You shall receive power to be witnesses.” Be bold and witness for Christ. The best witness is to be sold out for Jesus Christ. Allow people to see something real in you. The Spirit changes you and you grow spiritually. 2 Corinthians 3:2-3 – a living epistle. Living a life for God before man makes for an excellent witness.

8. You must learn to give.

Give of yourself to the work of God – time, talent, or material resources. Give out of pure heart willingly. As you do, it shows your love for God. This will take you to a new level in your spiritual growth. It shows Jesus’ lordship in your life. But you must give with the right motives, don’t give just to get. Give as worship to God.

9. You must be obedient to God’s Word.

A life of obedience and being a doer of His Word will cause you to grow spiritually.

This will bring the blessing of God upon you and you will be successful in your walk. Obedience beings possession.

10. You must be baptized in the Holy Spirit

The baptism in the Holy Spirit give you power and brings about spiritual growth.

It is important that we all grow and mature in the body of Christ. Ephesians 4:13, “Till we all come to the unity of the faith to a perfect man, to the measure of the fullness of Christ.” That is the maturity God wants for us. In summary:

1. Forget the past

2. Forgive

3. Pray

4. Believe

5. Worship

6. Walk with God

7. Be a witness

8. Give

9. Be Obedient

10. Get baptized

Move on into perfection in God. Be fruitful and multiply.

Amen!
