Leaving a Legacy of Faith

Marriage and Family Series - Leaving a Legacy of Faith

Each year there is a day set aside for all of us to remember and honor our mothers. So, today we will pay special tribute to all of our mothers.

In Ephesians 6:1-3 the Apostle Paul quotes Deuteronomy 5:16 which says, "Honor your father and mother which is the first commandment with promise...that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth."

Paul says through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit that if we will honor our parents that our lives will be better and that we will live longer.

I cannot over emphasize the importance of a godly mother in the home. A mother who loves and nurtures her children looks after all of their needs.

Leave a spiritual legacy to your children by following these guidelines:

1.) Set Godly patterns in your home.

  • Prayer
  • Respect
  • Reading the Bible
  • Hard work
  • A Vision for your Children

2.) Men-- husbands need to teach respect for the mother in the home.

3.) Pray for your children.

4.) It is your choice to live by God's standards- by His word, by the leading of the Holy Spirit- and to pass on a spiritual legacy of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ to your children and your children's children.

A mother who will take the time to teach her children right from wrong and sow godly principles in her children at an early age, is a blessing to her family. Proverbs 22:6-- "Grow up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from the Lord."

In today's society, we desperately need Christian mothers to help mold the character of our children and young people. A generation of Christian mothers can change the whole face of society. On the other hand, the breakdown of the family unit leads to disaster.

The influence of a mother upon the lives of her children whether positive or negative cannot be measured in human terms.

Children absorb the example and attitude of their mothers whether good or bad. Therefore, mothers must demonstrate to their children good, positive Christian attitudes and build on the love of God and faith in His Word.

Proverbs 1:8-- "And do not forsake the law of your mothers."

Mothers are to teach their children biblical stories and principles. She is to display honesty, temperance, gentleness, kindness, goodness and most of all-- love.

A mother demonstrates unconditional love-- children do not have to earn their mother's love. Mothers should love their children like God loves us-- unconditionally.

Many times children act up and behave wrongly because they are trying to get the attention of their mother. Children want their mother's love, attention and time.

Time is so important to kids. Spend good quality time with your kids. Many children are crying out for a mother's love. When you are there for your kids and when you are respected by your kids, they won't be looking to others to supply them the attention they yearn for.

In Proverbs 31:27-28, 30, the Word talks about a mother-- "She watches over the ways of her household, and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed, her husband also, and he praises her, but a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised."

Each one of you can think of your own mother and remember how she took care of you and loved you, even when you didn't deserve it. That's the way God lives and cares for us. Even when we don't deserve it, He still loves and cares for us.

There is something supernatural about the way God places love in us between a mother and her child-- the supernatural love of a mother for her child and the love of a child for his mother. Over the years this love grows and this leads to us honoring our mothers.

There are some of you mothers who have been praying for wayward children. But never give up hope. Keep on praying and standing. Psalm 37:4.

The prayers of a mother for her child are some of the most powerful prayers prayed on earth because the love of a mother for her child is the closest example we have of God's love for us.

Know this: Jesus Himself is interceding on behalf of that child (Hebrews 7:25). Get a vision of all your children in the kingdom of God serving God. You will be blessed. Confess they are saved and serving God. Don't ever give up-- 1 John 5:14-15.

Today, spend some time thinking of all the good times you have had with your mother. Tell her you love her and care for her. If she has already gone on to be with the Lord, thank God for her and her positive influence on your life.

Honor her all the days of her life!
