“They Shall Become One Flesh”

Genesis 1:26 says, “Let us (Elohim) make man in our (plural) image according to our likeliness.” Notice Verse 24- “Let the earth (dust of the ground) bring forth living creatures or animals.”

Verse 27- God created man in His own image- male and female. Genesis 2:7- God breathed the breath of life into man and he became a living being.

Verse 18- It is not good that man should be alone- I will make him a helper.

Verse 22- God takes a rib from Adam and makes woman- (womb-man).

Notice the rib helped create physical woman, not spiritual woman. She has her own spirit and soul.

Verse 23- She is bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh. Called woman- taken out of man.

Verse 24- Man shall leave his father and mother and shall be cleaved (sex) to his wife and they shall become one flesh.

Genesis 4:1-2- We see the family unit begins with Cain and Abel. Now God has ordained man to have one wife. Adam was not complete until God gave him Eve. Then she bore sons and they became a family unit. God ordained the family. God did not intend polygamy. Notice 29, Jacob was the first Hebrew to have multiple wives, but there was always confusion- David, etc., Solomon- 700 wives.

Now go to 1 Corinthians 11:3 and see God’s order of things. The head of every man is Christ. The head of woman is man. The head of Christ is God.

In each family unit the man is to be the priest or head of the family unit. This does not mean a dictator, but an overseer of his family to make sure they are provided for and protected. He is to be the spiritual leader in the family unit. This is God’s order.

Now let’s look at the marriage analogy between husband and wife and Christ and His church.

Ephesians 5:22-33-

God loves you because it is His nature to love you. He doesn’t love you based on anything you do or do not do. His agape love is an aggressive love that searched you out while you were dead in trespasses and sins and saved you.

Titus 2:11 says, “The grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men.” God is always aggressively searching out man to give him salvation. When a sinner responds, God is glorified. Look at the analogy- 1 Corinthians 11:7- the wife is the glory of man (her husband). Jesus Christ is glorified in His church and the husband is glorified in his wife. Here the Husband typifies Jesus Christ. The husband is the aggressor. The woman is the responder- the church.

Now look at Ephesians 5:25- “Husbands love your wives just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself for her.” Men, you are to love your wife with this type of love. Look at verse 30- Members of His body, of His flesh and of His bone. We become one flesh with Him- in covenant. The marriage relationship is a covenant relationship.

A man and a woman make a covenant to each other. Those are vows. They are not to be broken. It doesn’t mean they won’t be broken, but God hates divorce and He intended for man and woman to be one flesh as long as they live.

Go back to Verse 22- Submission is an attitude. Obedience is an act.

You should always be submissive, but you may not always be obedient. Submission is not abuse. The husband should not violate God’s law in his headship of the home. The husband is to love and provide for the wife just as Jesus does for the church. The husband is to treat the wife just as Jesus treats the church.

In verse 23 the phrase, “Savior of the body” means the provider of everything.

Verse 25- Notice Jesus gave Himself forher.

Verse 26- Word- is Rhema- spoken word.

We, as husbands, are to speak words of edification to our wives to encourage them. Philippians 2:3-4- esteem her. Rhema takes out the spots and wrinkles.

Communication is very important. Fellowship breaks down because communication is cut off.

Verse 33- Men love your wife as yourself. Make sure all her needs are supplied. At the wedding ceremony you become one flesh. You become one spirit when you accept Christ. The two become one, like the God head- three in one.

Verse 32- a great mystery. Marriage helps us to understand the mystery of the church. It shows God’s infinite love for her. Jesus set up an analogy in the world to demonstrate a spiritual truth.

Verse 33- Wives respect your husband- reverence, honor and admire him.

Commitment- Husbands and wives are to show commitment to each other.

Priorities- First to God- both husband and wife- then the family.

Good, strong families complement the church. Commit to God, then to each other, then to the family, then to the church. This builds strong units that the devil cannot destroy. He wants to destroy the family unit because he knows strong families can do irreparable damage to his kingdom of darkness.

Remember this: Families that pray and study together, stay together.
